Next Monday, I travel with a colleague to the 62nd International Wire & Cable Symposium and Conference (IWCS) in Charlotte. This is the first trade show and conference I’ll be attending dedicated strictly to manufacturers and users of wire and cable, and I’m looking forward to it. The annual event presents the latest technologies in product design, materials, applications and processes in a symposium format.
The event runs from Sunday, November 10 to Wednesday, November 13 at the Charlotte Convention Center.
What is intriguing to me about the more than 100 exhibitors on-hand at the event is that many of them are suppliers or services for fiber materials used in fiber optic cabling. As I’ve learned in recent weeks, fiber cables are growing in use because their costs are slowly being reduced while offering longer runs and longer life at higher data speeds. So this is no surprise that a majority of the exhibitors are in this growing field.
In addition, I plan to sit on some of the technical sessions during the Symposium Monday and Tuesday. Although I’ve covered cables in the past, I am looking forward to refreshers I can share with readers on things like fiber optic maintenance, shielding on copper cables, and even a look at fiber reliability. Other topics include measurement and the impact of wireless and 4G. What’s really cool is that it is the engineers and scientists from major companies are the ones that present their latest research and development efforts in these conference sessions.
Three days of formal lecture-style sessions are presented. In addition, the popular poster session allows for the more intimate one-on-one exchange between author and attendee.
Stay tuned for more from Charlotte.
