New line of USB 2.0 cable assemblies with crush-resistant plastic armor from L-com, Inc., North Andover, Mass., can withstand up to 800 psi, thus providing excellent crush protection at a much lower cost for those who do not need the metal armor.
Like metal-armored USB cables, the new plastic-armored cables are available with either USB Type A to Type B or Type A to Type A. They come in seven standard lengths from 0.3 to 5 m long. Though they do not provide as much protection as the metal-armored versions (which can resist up to 1500 psi, the cost per-meter is much lower for the plastic armor, such that the new 5-m plastic-armored cable is over 40% less than the metal armored version.
“We realized there is a market for USB cables that can resist typical shocks, impacts and crushes found in many applications such as military/aerospace, security, medical facilities and industrial environments,” said Steve Smith, Product Manager.
