Cables and insulated wires shall be constructed to the highest level of quality in order to be safely used for their intended purpose without the risk of causing damage to operators or property. Preventing harm to operators and property during usage or storage of operating equipment includes quality inspection to detect product defects, as well as correcting or minimizing the effects associated with cable quality.
Unless otherwise noted, cables and insulated wires should only be used for the conductance and distribution of electricity.
General requirements
The selected cables and insulated wires should meet the voltages and currents required by the operating equipment, system or device in addition to withstanding expected operating conditions.
Cables shall be constructed, installed, protected, used and maintained to prevent danger as far as it is reasonably possible.
Limiting conditions
The limiting conditions in UL, CSA, DIN VDE and HD specifications shall be taken into account. An acceptable service life will be attained in compliance with these limiting conditions, dependant on the defined conditions of the designed circuit. The usable life of a fixed cable for power distribution is longer than that of a flexible cable.
The influence by all of the factors given in the following sections must be considered as a whole and not on an individual basis.
