Smart phone, tablet apps for cable conductor and conduit sizing

The conduit and conductor sizing apps from General Cable are simple to use.

General Cable, Highland Height, Ky., has just launched three new calculation apps for sizing cable conduits and conductors. The apps are free to download and easy to use.

  • Voltage Drop app – Calculate the maximum circuit distance and minimum conductor size for your required voltage drop
  • Conductor Ampacity app – Calculate conductor ampacities for different temperature ratings
  • Conduit Fill app – Calculate the minimum conduit size per the National Electrical Code

The apps are simple to use. For example, in the Voltage Drop app, as in the others, the user is presented with just a few choices to simplify sizing. Simply select, “Voltage Drop,” then two choices are avaible: maximum circuit distance and minimum conductor size. Selecting one gives the user a variety of options, so they can select phase, conductor type (copper or aluminum) and size, voltage, amperage, parallel conductors and more.

For novices, each selection has a help function, with a brief description of what type of data is required. For example, under, “voltage,” the help identifies the estimated or exact voltage required at the source of the circuit, with typical source voltages being 120, 240, 277, and 480 V. If a mistake is entered, the calculation will notify the user. Results for maximum circuit distance also include maximum allowable voltage loss, actual voltage loss, and maximum amps per conductor.

General Cable also offers an Amperage app as well.

The General Cable apps are available for download from the App Store or on Google Play.
