New Foaming Fluoropolymer Wire Insulation Technology

PolyOne Colorant Chromatics just launched a new chemical foaming solution for fluoropolymer wire insulation that can reduce part density while enhancing the stability and efficiency of the manufacturing process. This advanced additive also enables customers to preserve electrical properties while reducing insulation thickness and raw material consumption through a consistent closed cell structure.

“It’s difficult to minimize the tradeoffs between thermal stability, foaming control and high processing temperatures when applying wire insulation,” explained Barto du Plessis, general manager, PolyOne Colorant Chromatics. “This new technology balances all three performance requirements and boosts productivity without the need for additional equipment investment.”

With this advanced additive, wire manufacturers can benefit from:

• Foaming Performance: Maximum gas generation resulting from no premature foaming enables greater process control
• Tight Tolerances: Enhanced dispersion of active foaming ingredients produces a consistent cell structure of 200 micron or less – insulation thickness and density are reduced without adversely effecting electrical, chemical or thermal properties
• Thermal Stability: Excellent heat resistance from 340 – 380°C supports effective homogenization of the foaming agent with high-performance polymers

These new chemical foaming solutions for fluoropolymer wire insulation are suitable for FEP, PFA and MFA polymers and are now available globally.
